How Natural Aromatherapy Uses Essential Oils

Oils that have been refined until they are considered "essential" is the primary tool for aromatherapy. These oil substances are from nature and have been taken from all the different parts of a plant, from root to tip. The physical and mental benefits of natural aromatherapy are from the actual natural oils, which is not the case with commercially made perfumes.

Getting the oils from the plant parts can be done several ways. Distilling the oils is a tried and true way which is still used the most often. Warming the plant matter is just the first step. The steam helps produce the oil by the collection of the condensed vapors. Some different ways to get the oils include extracting them by solvents, or even by using maceration. No matter what the technique used, the essential oil will be the result that is what a person is left with.

An uncommonly known fact dealing with essential oils is the various oil qualities involved. The method and location of plant growth determines how good the oils are. If the plant gets good water and sun, and is picked and used at the right time, it helps to improve the quality. Some locations are better for certain types of plants then for others.

The physical effects come from various reactions to the different chemical parts of the oils. Many of these same parts, or chemical pieces, are made by humans as well which is why the oils are so safe to use. The oils hit the nose first. Then the brain sends out signals, depending on the oil, which will effect how a person will feel. This can result in being able to calm a person down, or to liven them up a bit.

In order to produce a calming effect, a person may choose to use an oil with ester in it. This group which includes sage and lavender also works against fungus growth. Another natural aromatherapy group which provides physical healing and regrowth type of benefits include rosemary and eucalyptus. Natural occurring plant alcohols from sources such as tea tree, sandalwood and rose help a person to get rid of extra water, and will help to get the body going.

The plant oils can be very condensed by using certain techniques to get it. Just a little bit can go a long way. Before actually using them, some will want to dilute the strength of the oil first. This can help make a costly natural aromatherapy oil last a much longer time. Blended oils are very common purchases to first time customers, because they tend to be a bit cheaper. Some prefer to make their own oil combinations, which can be a great exploratory experience.
